My Favorite Style & Beauty Items of 2016

For the past few years, I've been writing a year end list of my favorite purchases of the year. While 2016 marked the end of my breastfeeding years, I did spend the majority of the year with a nursling - I needed to make sure my clothes were breastfeeding friendly. I fell in love with some products and questioned why I didn't see them earlier. You can see past years here: 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012, 2011. There are shoppable links throughout the post or you can scroll to the bottom for a full list.
I first received this product in a Sephora Play box, but fell in love with it pretty quickly. I use a little bit (no more than 4-5 sprays for my whole head) while my hair is still wet, but after I put in my anti frizz product. I twist the pieces around my face and end up with natural, air dried waves. Full disclosure: my hair texture is thick, coarse, and wavy. Some people don't like the smell, but I love it. It's the only wave spray I've tried that doesn't dry out my color treated (bleached) hair.
This simple necklace has become my go-to piece. You'll see me wearing it in many pics on my Instagram. It's easy to layer, but works beautifully on its own. Since it's an initial necklace, it's easy to get one for your partner, your kiddos, or even your beloved pet. The price is right and it's very well made. Can't beat that.
As a mom, under eye circles have been the bane of my existence. No concealer has been able to get rid of the shadows under my eye. I learned about color correcting and after watching what seemed like a million videos on the subject, I bought this product expecting nothing. I mean, Sephora has a great return policy and I can bring it back if it doesn't work. Boy was I wrong! When used in conjunction with a great concealer (see #7), I look bright eyed and well rested. Be careful, using too much of this product will give your skin a red-orange tint. A little of this stuff goes a long way!
4. Breastfeeding Friendly Rompers & Jumpsuits
I took a major style risk (for me) this year and fell in love with rompers. Yes, they can make going to the restroom a little challenging, but I only looked at ones that opened in the front. The buttons or faux wrap also made them breastfeeding friendly. This lovely purple-blue romper from The Gap was by far my favorite. I dressed up a black jumpsuit when I met Abby Epstein and Ricki Lake, producers of The Business of Being Born, Breastmilk, and The Mama Sherpas.
I originally overlooked this color because of the shade of the tube - really boring. After seeing several friends with amazing lipstick, I had to know what it was. To my surprise, it was Antwerp! I bought it in the spring and it was the perfect pop of coral-pink. It has since become my go to shade, regardless of what season of the year it is. Despite being matte, the formula does not dry out my lips. I quickly went out and bought another tube to keep in my purse. At under $10 a pop, I'd be silly not to have extras! Just before summer, I treated myself to a new pair of sunglasses. I was stuck between a really trendy silhouette or an oversized pair of wayfarers. I chose an oversized version of the classic pair and I am so glad I did. I wear them year-round and I think wayfarers are effortlessly cool. Luckily for me, Austin is almost always sunny and warm, so I have definitely been getting my money's worth.
You know how you may see a photo of yourself and think, "who let me go out like that??" Well that's what I think when I see photos of myself wearing my old concealer. Who knew that it was so yellow and didn't tell me?? I was very happy to find a full coverage under eye concealer in the right shade. At first I thought it was kind of difficult to blend, I found it much easier to work with after letting the color warm up on my wrist for a few seconds. It was much easier to spread and blend in seamlessly.
This is a dress I bought in early December, but it quickly made its way on to this list. I bought it for my husband's office holiday party and it was perfect. I felt like a million bucks and got tons of compliments (you can shop the whole look here). I would wear this dress to the grocery store if I could. It's comfortable, chic, and stylish. I sized up one because I knew it was very fitted; I'm glad I did, the dress skimmed the body and hugged me in just the right way. If you're not plus sized, Forever 21 has a number of black lace dresses for New Year's Eve or picking up your kid from school. PS, it is now appropriate to wear a lace dress to pick up your kid from school, because I said so.
