Balance

As I get deeper into my course and clinical hours, I have noticed that things get left to the wayside. My house is so messy, I'm weeks behind in laundry, and I'm being a crummy friend most of the time. I've been struggling to do it all, but failing miserably. Most days I feel like the world's shittiest juggler. One of my biggest issues is letting people down, especially my family and friends.

Late last week I had an epiphany of sorts, on how to handle my sudden busyness and lack of availability

The shift in perspective has helped me feel less guilty about saying no to social obligations, about leaving my son at the sitter, and about answering texts and emails days later. I don't feel as bad about the laundry waiting to be folded. It doesn't all have to get done.

This advice is applicable to so much of motherhood. We do not have to be perfect mothers or women. We need to seek the balance in our lives and our children's lives, in whatever way it is significant to you. It can be hard to figure out what is important to you when you're stressed. To help, make a list and give each item a priority number. Choose to focus on your top 3 or 5 items. Have your partner or a close friend hold you accountable for your list. I had to write down a list of my top 5 items and my husband is making sure I stick to it and do not take on any additional stressors .

How will you find balance?
